  • Presidential Speaker Series at NJCU on April 4 Features Lecture by Planetary Scientist Dr. Carolyn Porco

    Planetary scientist Dr. Carolyn Porco will take her audience on a trip to outer space with a lecture on the Cassini Project in the Liberty Science Center IMAX Theatre on Monday, April 4, at 6:30 p.m. The program is part of the NJCU Presidential Speaker Series.     Dr. Carolyn Porco is the leader of the imaging science team on the Cassini mission which is in orbit around Saturn. She is also an imaging scientist on the New Horizons mission, which made the news with its close encounter with Pluto and is now exploring the Kuiper Belt, and on the Voyager mission to the outer solar system.

    A popular lecturer, she has co-authored more than 120 scientific papers and is a regular commentator on science, astronomy and planetary exploration. She has consulted for the popular films Contact, based on the Carl Sagan novel, and Star Trek. She appears on PBS, the BBC, NPR and is a guest on the science series Stargazing LIVE.

    Dr. Porco is the recipient of numerous awards and honors. She has been named one of the scientific leaders of the 21st Century, one of the 25 most influential people in space by TIME magazine, and one of “50 People Who Matter Today” by the New Statesman. In 2010, she was awarded the Carl Sagan Medal by the American Astronomical Society for Excellence in the Communication of Science to the Public. Since 2015, she has been a visiting distinguished scholar at the University of California at Berkley and a fellow of the California Academy of Sciences.
